Somalia has the longest coastline on mainland Africa, stretching over 3,300 kilometers (about 2,051 miles) along the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden
The current Somali flag with its light blue background and white star was adopted in October 1954. The light blue color represents the sky and the Indian Ocean, while the star symbolizes unity and independence.
Somali traditional attire includes colorful garments adorned with intricate patterns and embroidery. For men, the “macawiis” is a long piece of cloth worn around the waist, while women often wear the “guntiino,” a draped dress.
Somali children enjoy traditional games such as “shax,” a board game similar to chess, and “baan,” a game involving throwing sticks. These games are not only recreational but also teach strategic thinking and teamwork.
Somali cuisine varies regionally but commonly features dishes like “bariis” (rice), “canjeero” (flatbread), “sambuusa” (samosa), and “hilib ari” (grilled goat meat). Coastal regions also offer a variety of seafood dishes.
